I have this stone age PC that runs my small lathe fine.
It's a Dell Optiplex GX1
Pentium III
600 MHZ
384 Ram
It has a 13,000 lb. (+/- ) CRT monitor that works good,
I put a LCD flat screen on it and can't get it to work.
The start-up screen comes on, then the starting Windows XP screen comes on, then it goes black.
Once, a little message came up that said "Out of Range", then all black.
Can you tell me what I can do to make this work for me ?

The flat monitor works fine on my other 2 PC's, which are newer so I know the monitor is OK.

Hi Russ,

The only thing I can think of is using the old monitor to reset your screen resolution and refresh rate to a lower (or different) value and trying the flat screen again.

Or if its easier to keep the flat screen attached just press F8 just before windows starts and go into safe mode and change the res/refresh there, should be an option to display only options that monitor can handle.

Actually, you probably need to set your resolution higher. I'm guessing you were running at 800x600, and a lot of smaller LCD's native resolution is 1024x768. I use Dell GX150 PIII's with an LCD. If you're using the onboard video, you may need to add a card.

Do remember seeing the old PC set at 85 Hz refresh rate where the newer ones are at 60 or 70 I think.

OK..it was the refresh rate and the resolution. Couldn't change the refresh in safe mode, it was greyed out, had to set it with the old CRT.
Res. was 640x480, changed to 800x600. It said 1024x768 was Out of Range but accepted it later.

So, 60 Hz is great...until I start Mach. Then while Mach is starting up, the screen starts to shimmer..or flicker. Mach runs OK but the screen is hard to look at. I increased the refresh rate to 70, then 72, then 75 and it got progressively better but still does it. went to 85 and it was out of range again and would not revert back. Had to hook up the CRT to get back to 75Hz.
Guess this is as good as I will get it ?
Anything else I can check ?

Do you have a long cable? If yes you may need to get a good quality one, my Bridgeport monitor was like that until I slashed out and got a brand name quality 5m cable.

 It's a standard length for a PC I guess. About 2m and has a ferrite (or whatever that bulge is) at each end. They are good quality I'm pretty sure as they came out of a govt. installation.
 I have several more I can try to be sure though.
