Phil,
   I did the knee on mine. I love it except for the speed. The only way I would do the knee again would be to use an air assist ballscrew and a big servo for speed. You could just hang a motor on the knee for tool length comp. and setting your work 0 and drive the quill for your z. They both have their benefits. The quill can be driven much faster for the same money. If you use the knee, you can lock the quill or still use it by hand for things like tapping.

I did both on mine a few years ago , I unplug the knee and plug in the rotary table from time to time, I generaly use the quill as the z  axcept when swapping from an endmill to the drill chuck on certain files, nice to have the option. The knee is slower but much easier to fit a servo motor

I vote for Quill as it's the least astonishing idea - but both is an intreguing prospect. Could you get mach3 to understand the idea of two Zs working togther?
