Advice needed from PC GURU
« on: April 04, 2007, 09:50:37 AM »
Hey Everybody,
I'm going to build a new office PC. I would like some advice. The biggest question I have is, what operating system is best suited to this machine?  ??? If I use Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 OEM will I be able to use this with Mach and the rest of my programs? ??? I don't have the drivers for Mach installed on my office PC. I only use it for test and tune in the office and that is limited without the drivers. Here are a few links to the components I would like a thumbs up or down on.

MOBO             http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2824015&Sku=A455-2320
Processor         http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2470587&Sku=CP1-AM2-5200
Operating Sys.  http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2571832&Sku=M17-7507

Thanks for any advice,
Brett

Unless you're running 64bit versions of your software, there's no need to use a 64bit OS, IMO. The best processor right now is an Intel Core2 Duo. Blows away Athlon X2's for speed, and runs a lot cooler at the same time. I have an X2 4400, and I like it, but if buying now I'd get the Core2 Duo. They weren't out when I built my current machine. I'd go with XP Pro, btw.

Thanks Ger,
I will go with XP 32 OS and look at the pentium processors.

Thanks again,
Brett

Is that the most expensive motherboard made.  :o

Unless you need every feature on that board, I'd go with a good mid range board, $150 or so, maybe a bit more. You'll save enough to get 2 gigs of RAM.  Read the reviews at Newegg on the different boards. You can't believe them all, but they give a good idea if the boards are any good. I got an MSI for my X2, and have been very happy with it. fwiw.
