Hello everyone this is my first post here.

I am troubleshooting this mill, using gecko 320x and a smoothstepper board, with a power supply kit from automation technologies.

Motors heat up very fast when on idle, and when i try to jog continually i get steps, even with the MPG i still dont get continuous movement. and sometimes it goes the opposite direction a couple of steps.

Any ideas?

Also, am I supposed to connect the neutral coming off the motors to the chasis of my machine?

I connected the neutral coming off of the 110, to the chasis on my control box. Is that correct?

Then I put that neutral on an empty block, should I ground that neutral to my machine aswell?

Personally speaking, i would say it sounds very odd or even dangerous to have connected the neutral to the chassis of any machine.

What motors are these?

Have you got a wiring diagram?

You say servos, have you carried out servo amp tuning yet? Servos need careful setup but it sounds like you have other problems here.

Sounds like a tuning issue, with the motors continually oscillating/hunting for position at idle, which can very quickly overheat them.

Neutral would depend on exactly what the 'neutral' wire from the motors actually is, and where you are (some countries, neutral is tied to earth, but you generally wouldn't tie it locally to earth in a machine).

That was the bit that worried me.

In some countries/areas, 110V neutral is gnd.

110V often consists of one wire at 0V tied to Gnd, with two other wires at 55V, but 180deg out of phase, so you get 110V.

I never knew that, similar to a contractors 240->110v isolating transformer over here, never more than 55v above ground, thanks.

In that case i would certainly be looking at servo amp gain/deadband tuning.
