Fine Tuning Stepper Motors

Got all limits/homing working and now I want to fine tune the 4 stepper motors which are all working fine but I find the jogging kind of rough.

Using the stepper calculator which I got from this forum I come up with a result of 16000 steps per inch which is a high number. If I remember correctly the number I used before was about 4000 steps per inch but I have lost the calcs.

My screws are 16mm diameter with10mm lead and single start. Motors are NEMA23, 270oz/in, 2.8A, Step angle 1.8 degrees, I use 8 microsteps and the motors are direct coupled.

What my steps per inch should be?

 OK so with the calculator I have and with the info you have given I get 160 steps per mm and if you multiply that by 25.4
You get 4064 steps per in. does this sound about right?

Thank you Charlie, that sound correct to me.

Are you familiar with an Excel spread sheet which was created by a member on this forum and it calculates the steps. Its very easy to use but I get as I said a high number and I was wondering why.

For now I will use 4064

 It might be the one I was using. I don't remember where I got it from. that will get you close and then you can use the axis calibration in Mach3 to get them spot on. Happy 4th.

Hi,


with a 8 microstep per fullstep regime your stepper will require 1600 pulses to do one revolution. If the pitch of the screw is 10mm then:
1600 / 10 =160 steps per mm or 4064 steps per inch.

If the numbers you have supplied are correct this should be perfect, no further tuning or messing around required.
